Resolution Revolution: The 3-Step Guide to New Year's Success

Woman at new years eve party

I know that New Year’s resolutions can truly work…but only if done the right way.

When you get it right, that New Year's resolution of yours - whether it's achieving a body with curves in all the right places, energy that doesn't dwindle at 3 pm, or to hit a 400 lb deadlift - is completely attainable.

BUT if you’re like 90% of people, you probably go about the process completely wrong every year and that’s costing you your dream.

Why New Year's resolutions go south:

You enter January telling yourself that you’re finally going to lose weight, exercise more, or eat healthier…

You craft big, beautiful goals in your head with the intent of becoming a better version of yourself…

But within the first 2 weeks of the year, you realize you’ve taken on too much and you say sayonara to those lofty ambitions.

Then you’ve essentially “proven” to yourself that it was all a pipe dream, and you’ll never have the body you want.

Major mistake: You have gone out of the gate way too hard with no strategy, accountability, or support.

Good news: achieving your New Year's resolution comes down to just 3 actions.

Having worked with hundreds of clients to help them not just achieve, but exceed their nutrition and fitness goals, I’ve identified exactly what’s needed to actually achieve your New Year’s Resolutions.

These are just 3 things you absolutely need to do in order to finally achieve those New Year's goals.

1) Have a sure-fire strategy that makes the process easy.

Big results come from small changes you can stick to. Fact.

When you bite off more than you can chew in the beginning without regard to what’s realistic for you, the only result is burnout.

Because it doesn’t matter how great your restrictive weight loss plan is in theory…if you can’t stick to it for more than a week without giving up then what’s the point?

Instead, here’s what I advise my clients to do:

Look at your current lifestyle and notice what you could do just a little bit better. What’s truly worked for you in the past? And more importantly, what hasn’t?

Learn from previous mistakes, don’t just keep trying the same things over and over.

Once you’ve taken an honest look at your lifestyle and what changes would be possible for the REAL you (not the idealized version of you where everything falls perfectly into place…that’s not realistic), selectively decide on 1-2 small strategic changes each week per week that feel doable.

Each day, commit to 1-2 DOABLE actions. These can be the same or different each day.

And celebrate yourself when you successfully follow through.

Life is already hard enough, make weight loss and fitness easier by having a strategy you can stick to.

2) Set up the right accountability.

Accountability comes in multiple forms.

There’s external accountability, which you can get through a coach, a friend, or a family member.

But the most important form of accountability is to yourself.

Because in the end, if you want your goal enough, you will take the right strategic actions needed to make it happen.

The way I coach my clients to stay accountable to themselves is simple:

On a daily basis: Review how you did with your “doable daily actions” with compassion and curiosity.

Ask yourself, "what did I do well, and what could I do better tomorrow?"

Repeat this process daily, always with curiosity, not judgment

If you’re making the right changes and continuously checking in with yourself, the weight will come off with no issues

Every 2 weeks: Set 1-2 measurable goals. Get specific. “Exercise more” will not work because there’s no way to definitively know if you’re succeeding. You’ll end up giving up because you don’t see “progress.”

On the other hand, “exercise 4 days per week” is measurable. You can check yourself honestly and fairly, and there’s no way to fudge the results. You either are or are not hitting that goal. That’s how I want you to structure your goals.

Next, set a review date every 2 weeks to re-evaluate how you’re doing. If you’re not hitting your targets, consider what you can do to either push yourself a smidge harder, or reconsider the goal itself.

IMPORTANT: The only way you won’t accomplish your goal is if you stop.

It’s like running a marathon…the only way you won’t finish is if you quit. So instead of stopping, just slow down. Make easier changes that give you a win you can celebrate.

3) Get the support you need to overcome barriers and unlearn bad habits.

The final piece to smashing your New Year’s resolutions is to invest in an expert mentor or coach who can give you exactly what you need to lose that stubborn fat or hit those targets in the gym. Here’s why:

Most people will stubbornly try to lose weight on their own because they think it should be easy.

And while they may have some initial success, almost unanimously, those who do not seek out a professional coach to help them overcome hurdles will ultimately revert back to old habits and will gain the weight back.

All humans have ingrained habits and limiting thoughts, especially when it comes to things like eating and exercise habits. Without a coach to push and motivate you, you’re likely to let barriers and excuses come between you and what you really want…

On the other hand, an expert mentor or coach automatically gives you:

  1. A proven strategy - they’ve weeded out what doesn’t work so you KNOW you’ll get results.

  2. Unwavering support and accountability so you never stray from the plan, even when your willpower is low.

  3. A painless process to help you lose weight or achieve peak fitness while unlearning bad habits so you can actually keep your results.

Investing in an expert coach who can see what’s stopping you and knows exactly what to do to fix it is one of the best investments you can make for the New Year. Because the reality is that it may be a New Year, but it's the SAME you. You won't magically change into a different person at the start of January.

If you’re ready to draw a line in the sand and make this YOUR YEAR to finally achieve your New Year’s resolutions...

So that by February, you’re down a pant size…

And by spring, you’re running after your kids again without getting winded....

And by summer, you’re wearing shorts…and a tank top…and looking in the mirror saying, ‘DAMN I look good!’
